Post Adoption Center Condensed Class Offering

We are happy to announce an additional offering of our Post Adoption Center class, Parenting the Hurt Child! The class will be offered as a camp/conference on June 14-15 from 9AM-4PM each day. The class will cover the same information as our 8-week course, and also offer the children’s nurture group!

We hope this shortened version is more accessible to families unable to commit to the longer 8-week program, or unable to make it to our office each week. Cost is $400 per family and the REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS JUNE 3, 2013.

Please contact Heather Diaz at postadoption@ccaifamily.org for more information!

Conclusion of First Post Adoption Center 8-week Course

Our Post Adoption Center wrapped up the final week of our 8 week class, Parenting the Hurt Child. It was a great success!  Some of our favorite feedback we have received about our pilot run:

“Our son is sleeping better than he has since we adopted him 3 years ago!”

“My daughter used to say, ‘I hate you,’ to me every day, several times a day.  Now she says it hardly at all.  When she gets upset, instead of yelling and screaming, she takes a deep breath and says, ‘I need to be respectful’.  It is an amazing feeling.”

“I underestimated what my kids could do and how well they can behave when they are given the tools they need.”

“We’ve already started using some of the principles we’ve learned in the parent’s and children’s classes, and averted 3 behavioral meltdowns in one day.”

“My daughter and I both loved the classes and it has truly helped us a lot at home.  We’ve had a lot of fun working together to use everything we’ve learned.”

We are thrilled about the feedback and so glad families are finding support and help through our new program!

Registration for our next 8-week session, beginning June 4th, 2013, is NOW OPEN. The deadline to register is May 27th, 2013.

CCAI Collaborates with University of Denver’s COMM 3900

For their Winter Quarter, the University of Denver’s COMM-3900 class partnered with CCAI for their Community Engaged Research Project (CRP).  Together with Dr. Beth Suter, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, students worked with CCAI’s Director of Adoptions, Judy Winger, and Domestic Adoption Program and Parent Training Coordinator, Sheila King, to develop concise training presentations and compile valuable research-based articles.  The students did an amazing job and we were thrilled with the results!

This rewarding partnership was recently featured in DU’s Spring Newsletter.

In the words of one student: “…this is the first time I felt that all my work has had a tangible purpose. Instead of focusing my education around myself and my needs, I was motivated to learn because I knew it could benefit the families served by CCAI. Talk about heart-warming, life-affirming.”

Heart-warming, indeed!  You can read the rest of the feature at http://www.du.edu/ccesl/media/documents/newsletters/2013_pg_spring_newsletter.pdf.  You’ll find Dr. Suter’s awesome students on Page 6.

Thank you COMM-3900 for your hard work and passion!  We were honored to work with you.

Post Adoption Center’s First 8-Week Course Going Great

The Post Adoption Center had its second class last night!  The parenting topic for the night was, “When Attachment Goes Wrong,” and the kids had lots of fun learning about respect and how to be gentle and kind.  They also had a ton of fun running around our Crash n’ Bump room!  Here are some fun photos from last night.  We’re looking forward to 6 more sessions of learning and fun!

Celebrating our first Post Adoption Center Class!

On Tuesday, March 5, 2013, CCAI’s Post Adoption Center held our first Post Adoption Center class, Parenting Your Adopted Child: Bringing Hope and Healing to the Hurt Child.  Six families joined our first class, where parents had a chance to meet for training and group support and explore some key strategies on the topic of child attachment.  Meanwhile, their children (seven in total) had a group of their own, playing together and learning about self-regulation and respect, and enjoying some sensory integration activities.  We had so much fun!

This group will continue to meet for the next seven weeks, with more families joining us as time permits.  We can already tell this will be a wonderful time of learning and growing for parents and children alike!

We’ll try to post some pictures for next week’s class. 🙂

Register Your Pre-Teen for Xpress Yourself

Through a combination of art and play therapy activities, Xpress Yourself allows your child to address some of the more difficult questions he/she might be encountering regarding adoption. These activities are designed to be fun and creative. In fact, they don’t really feel like “therapy” at all!

Xpress Yourself sessions are held over two weekend and are offered throughout the year for children ages 7-9 and 9-12!

Xpress Yourself’s Next Session: Girls 7 – 9, SUNDAY, MARCH 17th & SUNDAY, MARCH 24th (9:00 am – 2:00 pm)

Social Worker Training and CCAI’s Post Adoption Center

Last Friday, CCAI hosted a social worker training, led by our Director of Adoptions, Judy Winger, our Post-Adoption Manager, Heather Diaz, and CCAI social worker and parent trainer, Cheri Van Vinkle.  The training session served as an introduction to Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) strategies, a program developed by TCU’s Dr. Karen Purvis.  This was the first social worker training meeting of two, in preparation for CCAI’s Post Adoption Center’s big debut in the new year!

CCAI’s Post Adoption Center (PAC) will be making its debut with a TBRI Overview class offered both January 5, 2013 and February 9, 2013.  PAC will then be introducing its first 8-week course for parents, that will delve more into the specifics of TBRI parenting strategies every Tuesday,  March 5 – April 30, 2013.  These courses are offered for everyone and all are absolutely welcome!

To learn more about what CCAI’s Post Adoption Center will have to offer, please call our fantastic Post-Adoption Manager, Heather, at (303) 850-9998 x22.
